How to Make Spring Baskets
March 1st, 2026
Spring is in the air, making it the perfect time to enjoy a fun and colourful craft with your children! Creating spring baskets is a wonderful hands-on activity that children of all ages can enjoy with adult supervision. As they design and build their own baskets for an Easter egg hunt or spring scavenger hunt, children understand that they are making something to use, which gives their learning real meaning and value. It also helps to build their excitement for the next activity. Using age-appropriate materials - such as sturdy card, which is often easier for beginners to manage to cut than paper - also gives children the opportunity to practise their scissor skills and develop their fine motor control. By choosing their own colours and stickers for decoration, each child can personalise their basket, being creative, whilst having plenty of springtime fun.
You will need:
- A4 sheets of coloured card
- Scissors
- Stickers for decoration
- PVA glue or a glue stick
- Tissue paper (optional)
Step 1:
Cut the coloured card into strips (roughly 2cm wide).

Step 2:
Add a small amount of glue to the centre of one strip, then place another strip across it to form a cross shape.

Step 3:
Continue gluing additional strips across the centre in different directions until they are evenly spaced, creating a star-like base.

Step 4:
Take a new strip of card, apply glue to one end, and join the ends together to create a circular band.

Step 5:
Carefully glue the ends of each base strip to the outside of the circular band to begin forming the basket shape.

Step 6:
Glue another strip of card around the top of the band to strengthen and neaten it. Trim any excess card if needed.

Step 7:
To make the handle, glue each end of a new strip of card to opposite sides of the band.

Step 8:
Decorate your basket using stickers (or felt-tip pens, sequins, gems, or shapes made with a hole punch). You may wish to line the inside of your basket with tissue paper to prevent contents from falling through any large gaps.

Step 9:
Your spring basket is now ready to use! Take it on an Easter egg hunt to collect chocolate eggs or use it on a spring scavenger hunt to gather signs of the season.
