Changes to the list of notifiable diseases from 6th April 2025

From 6th April 2025, the UK Health Security Agency are making changes to the health protection notification regulations (NOIDs).

This means that as well as the current list of pathogens, health professionals are now required to report an expanded list of illnesses which includes:

  • Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)
  • Influenza of zoonotic origin
  • Chickenpox (varicella)
  • Congenital syphilis
  • Neonatal herpes
  • Acute flaccid paralysis or acute flaccid myelitis (AFP or AFM)
  • Disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI)
  • Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD)

The UK Health Security Agency say 'they hope that the changes will strengthen local and national surveillance and support a prompt response to outbreaks of infectious diseases.'
