About this event

Schemas are when children have a very strong drive or natural urge to play in this particular way. Their high motivation in this way of playing means they are very involved in activities which means deep levels of learning are achieved.

Schemas were first introduced into the EYFS in 2008.

Schema play is especially noticeable in toddlers. It is not possible for an adult to understand how an infant sees the world so we make assumptions that their understanding is similar to ours, but it is not. Understanding schematic play and how this fits into the Characteristics of Effective Learing can help you provide meaningful experiences for the children in your care. This virtual course focuses on the most common Schemas, giving you resource ideas and examples of how you can enhance children's vocabulary through their schematic behaviours.

Topics covered

  • Understanding what a schema is
  • Understanding different kinds of schema
  • Identify these schema in different children
  • Know what to do once you have recognised schematic play themes
  • Understand why it is important to spot schema and work with it
  • Using your environment to promote schematic play
