About this event

Working memory is one of the key underlying needs for children experiencing difficulty with maths in KS2. It's one of the biggest contributory factors for children experiencing challenges with writing and spelling in both KS1 and KS2. It's a significant barrier experienced by almost every child who will grow up with Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and Dyspraxia.

Where is it in early years so that we can proactively work with our youngest children and grow their memory strength and confidence from the start? So we can put some protective development support in that may help them avoid struggles in school? Well...actually, it's everywhere. Once you see where it is in your provision you'll draw it out and have fun with working memory with your children every day!

Topics covered

  • Find out why balance and level of involvement in play are linked and how both build memory
  • Discover finger and body awareness and how they contribute
  • Look at your daily plan and routines for their memory aspects and way to notice children's memory skills
  • Look at the development of language, executive function and memory and how they are all connected to develop together
  • Know the strategies to support children who find memory harder and whose brains and memory systems may be developing differently so that they can gain equality of access to learning and self confidence
  • Play some games yourself to explore different parts of your memory and understand how they work - and come away with lots of play ideas of how to encourage your children's working memory skills from the start.
