About this event

Childminders provide children with a secure, homely base where they can develop, learn about themselves and others, and make sense of the world around them. This close, consistent relationship puts childminders in a unique position to observe children, understand their individual needs and respond with empathy.

In this interactive two-hour session, developmental psychologist and Adlerian psychotherapist Karen John, PhD, will introduce the Crucial Cs - a developmental framework for understanding children’s basic psychological needs from birth onwards. You’ll explore what may sit behind challenging behaviours and consider how understanding children’s emotional needs and goals can help promote positive relationships, cooperation and wellbeing.

Karen John, PhD is a developmental psychologist and Adlerian psychotherapist, as well as a clinical and leadership supervisor and mentor. Over the past 30 years, she has developed and facilitated university-linked leadership and work-based supervision training programmes, acting as an organisational consultant to leaders and teams involved in integrating educational, social care, health, and community services for children and families in the UK. She also is a researcher and author of nearly 90 journal articles, book chapters, and the book: Democratising Leadership in the Early Years: A Systemic Approach.
