About this module

Communication: A Language-Rich Environment will help you develop your knowledge and understanding of children’s communication and language development, and explore practical ways to support this throughout your daily childminding practice.

You will discover how to create an environment that encourages children to listen, communicate and express themselves, with a particular focus on the important role of positive and responsive adult interactions. The module explores techniques for extending children’s vocabulary, developing their understanding and supporting them as they begin to use new words and form sentences.

You will consider how everyday routines, activities and experiences can provide valuable opportunities for communication, helping children to feel confident expressing themselves and developing their social communication skills. You will also explore the importance of your own communication style, including the use of effective non-verbal communication, meaningful interactions and storytelling to support children’s speech and language development.

The module also considers how to provide inclusive communication support for children with speech and language delay and children with English as an additional language (EAL). You will learn how observation, assessment and reflection can help you identify children’s communication needs and determine whether adaptations to your environment, activities or adult interactions could further support their development.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework for England is referred to throughout the training where appropriate. The module also recognises that different parts of the UK use different early years frameworks and terminology, while sharing the underlying principle that high-quality interactions and communication-rich environments are fundamental to children’s development.

Finally, the module explores how you can work in partnership with parents, sharing practical strategies and information to support children’s speech, language and communication both within your setting and at home. It also considers how training and coaching can help assistants develop their confidence and effectiveness when interacting with children.

All Childminding UK online training supports the use of Browser Extensions for translation and Dyslexia support. If you currently use a Browser Extension you can be confident that you will be able to use it while completing your training.
