Maths Environment Checklist


If you want to be sure that your setting is as effective as possible in providing for children’s emerging maths skills then this document is for you.

Maths is separated into ‘Numbers’ and ‘Shape, space and measures’ in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Children will learn about maths in their everyday lives because maths is all around us all the time.Children will largely learn mathematical language and concepts from conversations with their important adult and listening to adults using number and describing words in everyday routines and activities.

This checklist is an audit that is designed to help you look at the environments you provide to promote maths within your setting and help children develop in their number and space, shape and measure knowledge. It is divided into sections for Maths and Space, Shape and Measure to make it easier for you to link observations around learning in these areas.

As you work through the checklist, tick the column that most reflects your setting. This list is not exhaustive, you will notice extra rows that are left blank in case you wish to add other statements that apply to your setting.

Once you have completed the checklist, it will help you to identify any areas where changes may be helpful. You can then use the Action Plan at the end of this document to record any changes you wish to make.
