If you want to be sure that your setting is as effective as possible in providing for children’s emerging communication skills then this document is for you.
About this resource
The environment is widely recognised at the child's Third Teacher after the parents and you! Taking steps to create a rich learning environment is crucial for their learning and development.
This checklist is an audit that is designed to help you look at the environments you provide to promote communication skills within your setting and help children develop their listening, understanding and language.
It is divided into sections for Listening and attention, Understanding and Speaking to make it easier for you to link observations around learning in these areas of the EYFS. It is recommended that you include other staff members if you have them. As you work through the checklist, tick the column that most reflects your setting. This list is not exhaustive, you will notice extra rows that are left blank in case you wish to add other statements that apply to your setting.
Once you have completed the checklist, it will help you to identify any areas where changes may be helpful. You can then use the Action Plan at the end of this document to record any changes you wish to make.
Having worked through your Communication Checklist for my childminding setting, I am amazed at the number of small changes I can make that will really benefit the children. I now have an action plan of what I want to do in the coming weeks
